Revolving Art Incubator | EXHIBITION
‘No Condition Is Permanent’
Runs until 31st Jan 2020
FREE
Revolving Art Incubator is an alternative art space in Lagos located in Silverbird Galleria. We popped in a couple of weeks ago to check out the exhibition ‘No Condition Is Permanent’. In a nutshell, it’s presenting a microcosm of Lagos, extracted from conversations and sights across the city, in the stairwell and basement of Silverbird.
As you wind down the stairs, you encounter various aspects of Lagos life. Chalk drawings on the walls highlight the littering pandemic that the city faces, sitting alongside brightly coloured geometric paintings by Babatunde Ogunlade.
Cumulatively, the experience is an invitation into a world spanning street hawkers to Lagos nightlife and beyond. The bleak is countered with the uplifting, with signage of hope such as “Las Las We Go Dey Alright” and education resources like the under the bridge library.
A couple of bits that tickled us “Forget swag, I’ve got shakara”; “Ashitect”; and our love for cursing people “DO NOT STEAL ANYTHING FROM HERE OTHERWISE YOU WILL DIE. THUNDER WILL KILL YOU”. Street food / bukka food is represented, there’s an installation of ‘Madam B Beer Parlour’ where asun, nkwobi and peppersoup amongst other things are on sale alongside a suya spot. The space is so dense that you’d need a couple of hours or several visits to really soak up the detail.
